Приєднався 16 гру 2020
My name is Stefan and as a bonsai novice I enjoy growing various tree species and learning their growth habits as I attempt to transform them into bonsai trees. I prefer working with succulent and drought tolerant species but I equally enjoy growing other tropical and non-tropical species.
As the channel name suggests, some of the species featured here, as well as my approach to bonsai, may not fit the traditional approach to bonsai. I will be covering the evolution of odd bonsai as well as more usual tree species while also tackling other bonsai related topics such as home-made bonsai tools and pots.

Bathroom plant shelves with grow lights | Jysk ladder bookcase hack
I'm modifying a ladder bookcase to use as bathroom plant shelves equipped with grow lights.
While I was trying to figure out where I'm going to keep all my tropical plants this winter I thought of extending my winter plant storage space with some bathroom plant shelves. I wanted to make best use of the available space so I decided to go with an over toilet shelving unit. But since I couldn't find any ready-made product that would fit my case I decided to use a ladder bookshelf and adapt it to my needs. Don't think the title is an understatement. I literally had to hack the ladder bookcase to make it fit and I also made a custom plant shelf.
I had to do some alterations to make these bathroom shelves suitable for growing plants. One of the most important changes was equipping the plant shelves with grow lights to provide the necessary lighting requirements during the dark winter months.
Naturally this build doubles as indoor bonsai shelves and will make a good winter home for some of my bonsai projects.
The shelves I got were Herning, 5 shelf, ladder bookcases from Jysk, which is a retailer of various household goods. It's similar to Ikea but is generally viewed as selling cheaper products of lower quality than it's Swedish competitor.

💡The grow lights I added to the ladder bookcases were made out of LED strip lights. I came up with this idea after seeing a video made by Shane from MIGRO on building DIY grow lights from common LED bulbs. I recommend watching his video as he explains why this could be a cheap and efficient alternative.

Rubber tree bonsai: Initial root work and pruning for ramification
Переглядів 35 тис.2 роки тому
Initial root work and pruning for ramification on a future rubber tree bonsai. A rubber plant is generally considered as not being a good candidate for a bonsai due to its large leaves. But there is such a thing as a big leaf bonsai and leaf reduction might be possible to some extent. So I'm making the first steps for training a plain rubber plant from cutting to a Ficus elastica bonsai. An ini...

20 year old jade plant repotting and light pruning as the start of a big jade plant bonsai project. This is a 20 year old Crassula ovata plant that belonged to my grandparents which have sadly passed away. Now I'm taking care of this jade plant and I intend to train it into a big jade bonsai tree. Occasional repotting is one of the operations required as part of jade plant care. It involves rem...
Ginseng Ficus bonsai pruning: A year into the development of my Ficus microcarpa bonsai
Переглядів 101 тис.2 роки тому
I'm pruning my Ficus microcarpa ginseng bonsai through the year and showing the effects of each trimming. Pruning is an important aspect of ginseng Ficus care and is necessary both in the bonsai training phase and for maintaining mature bonsai trees. Ginseng Ficus bonsai pruning may have to be performed several times a year because Ficus microcarpa is a vigorous grower given the right condition...
Mars Hydro grow tent unboxing, setup, review and first impressions - 120x60 cm / 4x2 feet
Переглядів 9 тис.2 роки тому
Presenting the unboxing, setup, review and my first impressions on the Mars Hydro 120x60 cm / 4x2 feet grow tent. Winter is not a great time for tropical plants (bonsai included) if you live in a temperate climate and have to keep them indoor. The limited amount of light and reduced light levels are not sufficient for most house plants. One solution for this is to provide artificial light, and ...
DIY Kintsugi - Broken bonsai pot repaired with gold colored powder and epoxy

I'm using a DIY kintsugi approach to get my broken bonsai pot repaired with gold colored powder and epoxy. You may remember this papercrete bonsai pot from a video I made this spring showing how it god damaged by frost. Because it became unusable I had to do an emergency repot on my elm pre-bonsai that was occupying the pot. Here's a link to the previous video ua-cam.com/video/OyKxfaGi7rQ/v-deo...
Save Aloe plant from root rot by repotting

This video is about my attempt to save aloe plant from root rot by repotting. Back in summer I noticed that the Aloe arborescens plant which I pruned in January wasn't doing very well. You can find the previous video at this link: ua-cam.com/video/WpJhgQDoSto/v-deo.html Upon inspecting the plant it turned out that the compacted soil provided poor drainage which led to the development of Aloe ro...

This is a virtual visit of the National Bonsai Collection at the Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden. This autumn I was on a weekend break in Budapest and I had to visit the National Bonsai Collection (Nemzeti Bonsai Gyűjtemény) which is located at the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden. There's a special bonsai pavilion dedicated to the collection, in the Japanese garden area, where the bonsai tree...

How to make a soil sieve from cardboard
Переглядів 7 тис.2 роки тому
In this video I'll show you how to make a soil sieve from cardboard. Whether you have to mix soil for succulents or bonsai trees, when you need various granularities you must use a soil sieve (some may call it a soil sifter). And if you don't have a soil sieve at hand you either order one and wait for it to arrive or you make due with what you have and improvise a makeshift soil sieve. I found ...
Clump style Ficus benjamina bonsai pruning on a rainy day

I'm pruning my clump style Ficus benjamina bonsai on a rainy day which seems to hint that summer is coming to an end. This multi trunk Ficus benjamina bonsai has had quite a year. Since January it vas both repotted and pruned and it still continues to grow strong. Since autumn is closer and closer and it will soon be the time to bring tropical bonsai indoors its time to clean-up the structure o...
Overgrown hornbeam pre bonsai summer pruning
Переглядів 2,5 тис.2 роки тому
My overgrown hornbeam pre bonsai was in need of a summer pruning so I'm pruning back all the vigorous growth. This is the European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) which I hard pruned back in spring hoping that it will grow some branches near its top that could be used as a new apex. And boy did it grow! I now have to prune back this overgrown hornbeam to get it back in shape. So this video is about...
Saving a Yucca plant with extensive trunk rot
Переглядів 80 тис.2 роки тому
This video documents my efforts for saving a Yucca plant with extensive trunk rot, that I found back in January of 2021. I'm always keeping an eye out for abandoned plants during spring and autumn when people put out vegetable waste resulting from cleaning their garden or house plants. As a result, I found another Yucca plant just a month after I found my first one. Like my first Yucca, this se...

Mars hydro sp3000 no have IR light
Can I grow tomatoes with this grow light
Thank you, i purchased my first one and this will be my first "bonsai" attempt! I aspire to one day have several healthy beautiful bonsai, I am however very timid. I believe this is the best place for me to start!
Question -- could you have left some of the roots above the selected root plane on the tree above ground and planted the tips to make aerial roots? Or will you progressively raise the tree so that the selected root plane becomes exposed as nebari and aerial roots?
Jades are resilient plants. Good thing. The 'soil' you provided looks a lot more like gravel than soil. Once acclimated, my jades love full summer sunlight. I can't imagine them being sunburned by grow lights. It's been a couple of years since this video was posted. I hope the jade is doing well.
Be careful. It is a beautiful and spectacular plant but the roots are very long and will spread many yards/metres away from the main plant.
That's great good work😊
How long from big pot to ground and what time of year?
This was really helpful, i'd love to keep seeing videos on the progress. I'm about to start my bonsai journey and i have some ficus trees i want to turn into bonsai 😊
I performed hard pruning two weeks ago on my ficus benjamina clump-style bonsai that is 22 years old. I had let it get leggy, but the base is massive. I cut the top by 50 percent. I left it alone in a shady area to recuperate and am happy to report that there are many back buds up and down the trunks. In another season or two I hope to have a much improved bonsai. Thanks for the video.
What is the best timeof the year for hard pruning?
FINALLY~~ THANK U FOR MAKING SENSE!!
Amazing presentation. I learned a lot on how to care for my ponytail palms. When I bought mine it came in a pot with 9 baby plants.
If there's only gravel and no soil how do they get nutrients?
WHY ARE THEY IN ORGANIC SOIL FIRST?
Is there an update video?
You really love and care for your plants! It was very soothing watching you plant the first two cuttings so gently. Thank you for sharing this information with us!
Great video. Thank you. Any updates with this Ficus bonsai? Im very curious about that.
Hi, I m living in a tropical climate & just started to grow jade plant. The weather is hot & I leave it under the garage. I don't water everyday but leaves are still dropping.. where did I go wrong? ? I try to propagate using the drop leaves but no luck
Thank you so much for the information! I’m going to try it! I’m excited!
Thank you! Was wondering how much you water them though ??
Your never going to get there,,,,,! REAL TALK
Thank you for the great review. Not as boring, and no mumbling like the other guy.
I´m just trying to save a 16 year old overwatered house yukka, today I cut it back and repotted it and left it on the balcony where hopefully the sun can dry it out a bit. But I put it in soil not stones, is that a mistake?
Thanks for the video. I would split it in two plants instead. Double trunk is usually not the best idea.
Did all your pots with the seeds stayed indoors at room temp?
What is your soil composition?
Were there follow up videos? I typed in Wisteria in your main channel and only saw this video with "Wisteria". I bought a kit with multiple seed types for my wife for Mother's Day and it contained Wisteria, Japanese Maple, Judas Tree, and several others. I was hunting around for more information on Wisteria.
How long does it take wisteria to flower from seed?
I really hope you’ll come back to making videos, I really like them👌🏻
I took my seeds from some pods that had dropped off my wisteria which last year had hundreds of pods. The pods are still there from last year and haven’t exploded or twisted. However the seeds I germinated took about a week or so and hey presto little inch high sprouts have appeared!
Thank you very much, it is an excellent video. In what month did you work on the roots? I am located in Mexico and now it is spring. Can I work on the roots of my fucus now?
One question, can i remove the grafts and use for trees? I dislike the bulb and the offshoots seem to produce larger leaves.
Thanks for the video! How can I help prevent burning the leaves? Gradual exposure before I actually planet in the balcony?
Is it true that wisteria from seeds will take several years (maybe a decade!) to produce flowers? I have a few seeds that are growing but got very disappointed when I saw another channel saying this😢
What a wonderful video! Thanks for sharing ❤
Love your comments. I learned a lot. Will try to grow a bonsai Schifflra
Can you please share the name the type in the color of the different wisteria on another video? Thank you ❤
Thank you 🙏 I appreciate your well done video 👏💓
My huge yucca was dying so i followed your instructions and today I have 1/8" growth from the trunk. I'm really excited.
There's nothing left to cut
Plant looks healthy and happy now
Bad ass process
Is there an update video for this yucca?
This helped me so much especially the charts at the end for the dimmer settings and hang height. Cant thank you enough 🙏🏻
My sister's mother has a wisteria plant and she brought me home a seed so I did this method and it worked exactly like he said it would same amount of days and everything mines root popped out on day 5
Get seeds, soak in water (rain water if you can) put the container in a cupboard for 2 days. Remove container and add seeds to a paper towel, add water to towel, put it in a cup and back to the cupboard. Check daily for root tails and plant when you have a few. Some seeds are slow starters.
Great job🎉
Clump those seedlings together and let them grow wild so the trunks would thicken and fuse together into a nejikan
The "velvet" involving the 'seed pods' is amazing. Whoever discover a way to 'extract' it ...
